Declan Rice- game changer or bit of a disappointment?
I hesitate to ask this question because Declan is clearly an extraordinary talent but it struck me when I watched the game against Palace that Saha impacted the game much more than Declan did. I found myself thinking, just before he scored against Southampton away, that we weren’t getting as much out of him as you’d expect from a guaranteed starter for England. And then he scored, so maybe I’m talking bollocks. It’s just that for all the hype around him there are times I forget we have an incredibly well regarded international player on the pitch and on our side. Perhaps it’s Moyes’s fault for using him as he does and not allowing him a free reign to rampage forward until we go a goal behind and eighty minutes have passed. Whatever. I’d be interested to know if others feel young Dec- in quite probably his last season with us- should be grabbing games and our team by the scruff of the neck and getting us over the line. Thoughts?

He will miraculously improve after the World Cup.

He will, a lot of players have one eye on the World Cup and are not playing well with the other eye.

He's had a poor season to date, no doubt about it, but is still head and shoulders our best player

From what I'm told he's found the captaincy challenging. Gone are the days where it didn't really matter. In the age of TWITTER there's a lot of shit that goes with it. Take with a pinch of salt, as vexed says he may have had one eye on the world Cup

I’m not sure the captaincy was the right move. The boy is class but do the old players in the departure lounge really respect him as captain?

Yes, but really annoying when he skys those crosses into the box when a goal chance looked possible.
And yes he is our best player.

how is he supposed to change the game when he's sat on top of the centre backs for the majority of games? moyes doesn't want game changers, he wants robots

Re: Declan Rice- game changer or bit of a disappointment?
The issues this season are that we have been so shit, Declan has been doing too much. I mean he was covering Cresswell’s fuck ups at left back vs Palace.

He’s taken on too much load and responsibility, especially with no fit CB’s a lot of the season.

Birth of his first child, not having a relationship with Paqueta yet, having to play with an out of form Soucek,

Should never have been made club captain, he’s a young man and likely to leave at the end of the season.

Having said that still our best player by an absolute mile.

You know he plays in a very different position to Zaha?

He hasn’t had a poor season at all. He’s one of the few that hasn’t. His ability in his position is unbelievable. The best in the world at his job, for me there is no question on that. He would be ridiculous in that Man City team.

Not a popular opinion I know but I don’t rate him. His passing is always to feet and not 4/5 foot in front of the running player he passed to.

Always has to break the run to collect the ball.

Rice is a truly wonderful footballer and will naturally improve to an even higher level when he inevitably leaves us, sadly.

I don’t think there’s any limit to what he can achieve in the game.

Needs to stick to be a DM.

Stupid question
Agree with Miike and Charoo.
You'll see his level at the WC.
to much on his shoulders with the negative manager.
When you have so many defenders and defensive tactics around each gets in everyones way.
Rice is class and doing it on a weekly basis.

Interesting point, if you think back to the 2-2 draw with Palace last season Conor Gallagher won the battle in midfield and scored 2 goals.

Always said this, he is a brilliant footballer but isn’t responsible for many points on the board, given his monetary value.

If he goes for £120m and you got in a DM, AM and a winger for £40m each, you’d get a lot more points - as long as Moyes is gone!

We’d all rather he stayed and the money was still invested in the team but in my opinion it won’t happen and the way this season is playing out; it’s going to be very easy and accepted by the fan base for him to say he’s had enough at the end of it.

Re: Declan Rice- game changer or bit of a disappointment?
If he hadnt played at all this season I reckon we'd be closer to 0 pts than 14.
Hasnt been as good as last season mainly because he is trying to do too much , putting out fires and trying to jump start this spluttering old banger of a team that Moyes has rolled onto the forecourt.
Think he can be a real what used to be called a box to box midfielder and think he would be great in a positive side like Man City and how Arsenal are playing at the moment.

With a new manager, new owners & some ambition I could still see him staying but right now I imagine he cant wait to leave in the summer.

Probably the best in his position in the world. Unfortunately wasted by Moyes in the worst set up team in the premier league.

I think that this thread proves that when my generation dies, proper West Ham dies with us.

Modern football is shit. “Look at me” social media types with their shit hot-takes are even worse….

Re: Declan Rice- game changer or bit of a disappointment?
Suffering from playing in a team that plays with 10 men behind the ball, and players that can't pass a football.

He'll go in the summer, and he'll be a superstar for his new club. There was a chance he could have stayed, but that's been fucked.
